What we do
Sachuest Point is an area of the Town of Middletown, Rhode Island, along the Atlantic Ocean that features many beautiful vistas, natural open spaces and parks, attractive beaches, wildlife, sports and boating. Sachuest Point features two beaches on either side of the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The mile-long Second Beach has clean sand and attractive surf that make it popular with families and those who love water sports (surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing.) Third Beach, located where the Sakonnet River meets the Atlantic Ocean, has a boat ramp and moorings.
There are also rock outcroppings in the area that are famous for their geological as well as scenic qualities. Purgatory Chasm, a deep natural chasm in the bedrock just to the west of Second Beach, and Hanging Rock, a large outcropping conglomerate rock that overlooks Sachuest Point, are two of the more dramatic examples of these rock formations.
Sachuest Point is, however, removed from the Atlantic Beach District, where many restaurants and hotels attract tourists and other visitors to the area. The Town of Middletown would like to set up directional signs to guide visitors to the more remote and undeveloped section of town known as Sachuest Point. These signs will identify the area as “Sachuest Point”, for which we would like a symbol that is emblematic of the area’s natural beauty and riches.
