Name On Logo: Central Valley Alliance of Atheists and Skeptics
Our Slogan
A Secular Voice in the Valley
What we do
The Central Valley Alliance of Atheists and Skeptics is formed as a educational association focused on the population of the California Central Valley in order to promote secular viewpoints in public discourse, educate the public on the use of rational scientific inquiry and positive secular philosophy, promote the First Amendment guarantee of separation of state and church, urge camaraderie among the secular community and their supporters, and encourage joining or forming affiliated non-theistic organizations.

Industry: Non-Profit
Things to communicate through the design
1. A fun community of secular and skeptical people
2. Science education
3. Willingness to assist other like-minded communities
The target audience
Focus more on college students and young working adults and families. But it should be acceptable to high school students and older (baby boomer) adults.
The people who most need this community are intelligent, sometimes college educated, intellectually curious, and willing to explore. Our members include those who have left religion, or who have never had religion in their lives.
Although CVAAS works with all secular / skeptical organizations in the California Central Valley, it focuses mainly on the Southern half of the Valley, from Stockton to Bakersfield. This is also called the San Joaquin Valley.
This is an economically depressed area, farmland dotted with cities. The people here are hard working, and don't have a lot to show for it. Although the area is very religious conservative, there are a large number of secular people here who are very interested in the world, and do the best they can to learn about how the Universe works. They could be thought of as amateur (hobbyist) science enthusiasts.
We like these fonts, colors and style
The fleur de pensée (Flower of Thought) is a favorite. This is a design by Mark Boyd, released to the public domain (http://bit.ly/eVt3BA). We have looked at using it in a logo already, but are unhappy with the colors, fonts... etc.
CVAAS members and officers will use the Rational Valley forum to discuss the results of this contest at

Another favorite incorporates our web address,
[Login to view URL] using the second letter "A" as a thicker version of the Scarlet A from the Out Campaign (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_Campaign).
We have also used the map of California in our logo, with the Central Valley highlighted in various ways. This is not one of our favorites, but if it is done well we will consider it.

The font should be clear and easy to read, and should impart some fun dynamic energy without being cliche'.
The logo can be colorful, but should also be easy to recognize if it is turned into a black & white or two color print on a T-shirt.
Instruments of science are welcome, but not necessary. Beakers, physics, DNA, measurement tools. Stay away from the common Atomic symbol - it's somewhat overdone.
Ask yourself - "What would Carl Sagan do?"
Our design will be used on
(Web) (Print Media) (Billboards & Signs) (Television) (Mugs & Tshirts)

Just a reminder - if you use the Red "A" - it must be the SECOND "A" in the CVAAS acronym.
