Best of the Burgh Logo Design Contest
Name On Logo: Best of the Burgh
Our Slogan
No Slogan
What we do
We are an advertising venue, with on-line and in-print media. We need a logo that can be recognized as both being a "Burgh Thing" as well as being a branding icon for use in advertising, on promotion, and on stickers/door clings for the shops/merchants. We need a simple stylized version of our more complex "vision" to use along with, behind, or over printed or stand-alone to "brand" things we do, distribute, or promote.
Industry: Media

Things to communicate through the design
1. burgh based
2. Pittsburgh targeted
3. quality and brand confidence

The target audience
Pretty much everyone in the area, with cross demographics on age, race, education, etc. We are mainly targeting restaurants, entertainment, and activity venues, but we have plans for various niche retail as well. So the target audience is "everyone" who gets out and does things.

We like these fonts, colors and style
We have been having incredible trouble getting this designed.
We have dozens, maybe more, designs that all skirt the concept
we are trying to embrace. So we'll try here.

There are two concepts here, one is the "larger" concept for our
"masthead" idea, the other is the simplified "logo" form of that
we can use for "branding" on printed/promotional materials. We've
been trying for months, and need to go to press ASAP. So pardon
if this is a bit confusing. Use it as a guide. Feel free to think
"out of the box." We may buy several logos if we see a use for them.

The idea is a logo for "Best of the Burgh" that we can use as
a header on a 4"x9" set of publications, as a web-header, on
letterhead, on stickers, promotional materials, window clings, etc.
The format/concept has to be flexible enough to translate from a
billboard sized icon, to a small desktop/1"square icon.

It should be identifiable in various sizes, stretched or compressed,
and it should be able to stand up to "variations" without losing it's
identity.

The concept is to use the two B's of the "Best" and "Burgh" as
the uprights in a stylistic "bridge" that sweeps from left to
right, in a slight arc.

We envisioned the B's to be stone at the bottom and move to a
metal look, the way the bridges are here. We also envisioned
the roadway to come either from the middle of the B's, or from
each of the openings in a double decker format.

The right side would be "larger" and it would sweep up in an arc toward the right corner. So on a 4" span, it would be maybe 1.5-2" on the left, narrowing to about .75-1" on the right. This would leave room for other graphic elements under it - water, text, tag lines, etc.

We'd like a stylized skyline graphic of the 'burgh behind it, more to the right, with color/"The Point" toward the left.

The smaller letters span between the B's and after it, apparantly
supporting the bridge.

In one "envision" the bridge roadway was slightly twisted like
a ribbon to give the idea of movement/motion.

The concept is "Bridging the neighborhoods" and Pittsburgh has
a lot of them.

Steel, Bridges, water are all "burgh" icons. The colors would
be a variation of yellow/black -- not necessarily the sports team
colors, but similar.

We wanted the piers to have a stone look (large stone, not little
brick). More towards the browns or greys, than black.

Color is actually open, as we need this to translate into a simple
black and white as well.

We've envisioned full color (even photographic) backgrounds for
the masthead type uses, and a more 2-color (foreground/background)
logo for the "on the street" uses. Stylized graphic imagery would
be great, to give the effect of a simplified photo look in bright
colors.

The key is a "movement" or "sweep" from left to right to go with
our layouts. The ability to be easily identifiable as a "burgh"
thing. The ability to translate into the more complex/colorful
masthead/header format.

Note: The above are all *our* concepts, as given to designers at
various times. What we got back ranged from utter cr*p to just
totally missing the point. Come up with something close to what
we have in mind, and you could see it all over the 'Burgh.
