What we do
The mission of the Houston Pride Band is:
- To advocate for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community by promoting knowledge and understanding through music.
- To provide opportunities for high caliber musical performances for the GLBT community and beyond.
- To provide a welcoming and comfortable musical outlet for GLBT and GLBT-friendly wind, brass and percussion players.
- To support and raise awareness for causes which are important to the GLBT community.
Founded in 1978, the Houston Pride Band has a proud 30+ year history. Serving as a community band in Houston's GLBT community, the Houston Pride Band has several groups perform at community events throughout the year as well as concerts and parades. We also provide a fun social experience for musicians.

The target audience
Our membership ranges in age from college students to senior citizens and is diverse in every area of measurement. Our audience tends to be from the GLBT community, but is beginning to attract people outside this population subset. Our audience is also older, but there is an increasing youth element as we broaden our repertoire of music.
Another major target for the logo is the business community. We would like to increate the profile of our organization in the business community, both for audience development and as a potential funding source.
The logo should in some way evoke the substantial, long term presence of the organization in the GLBT community. Our members provide a sense of family . . . much more so than other community bands.
We like these fonts, colors and style
We need a clean, recognizable design that brings to mind both a symphonic concert band (composed of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments - no stringed instruments) and dedication to the GLBT community. Inclusion of the treble clef and the shape of Texas in the old logo is by no means required, but designs that do use them will not be excluded from consideration. While freshness is welcome, the design should not be one that ages poorly, and begins to look dated in just a couple of years.
The rainbow colors are traditional representation of the GLBT community (I have attached a photo of the gay flag as reference to the colors). However, we would like the winning design to work well in a black and white environment in the event it does have color. It should be scalable so that it looks good on a large banner or poster, or in a 1/4 page or smaller (business card) setting.
In short, we are looking for a design that expresses the tradition, stability over the long term, and professionalism of the organization.
I have included a file with our current logo that is dated and in need of updating. We do NOT wish to have a slogan/tag line on the logo.
