What we do
BioGPS is a website that serves the biological research community. There are ~25,000 genes in the human genome. BioGPS seeks to aggregate all the existing knowledge about those genes' function, especially how they impact human health and disease.

Relative to other online biological resources, there are a few distinguishing characteristics about BioGPS:

  • We host data that shows where in the human body each gene is “expressed” (or active)

  • We serve as a “hub” or a “marketplace” for all online resources about gene function

  • We allow and encourage users to directly contribute to the community

BioGPS (http://biogps.gnf.org) has been public for ~2 years now, and currently receives ~170,000 page views per month. Your design will definitely be viewed by a lot of people! We will probably have more design work in the future, so we would definitely consider an ongoing relationship with a designer we like.
Industry: Internet

Things to communicate through the design
1. organization and synthesis of information
2. powerful
3. fun and easy to use

The target audience
BioGPS is targeted toward a broad cross-section of biological researchers. They come from universities, pharma and biotech companies, and government agencies (e.g., NIH). Most users are relatively well educated with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Many or most will have advanced degrees (Ph.D. or M.D.) or be in pursuit of an advanced degree. Users will generally have studied molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, or cell biology.

Users of BioGPS are roughly equally divided between men and women. They are drawn from a broad range of ages from mid-twenties to fifties (though likely biased toward the younger end).

We like these fonts, colors and style
We do not have strong ideas of what the logo should look like, so we are very open to your ideas. There are many possible visual elements that one can imagine based on the “distinguishing characteristics” outlined above. For example, since we show _where_ a gene in expressed in the human body, one can incorporate imagery related to maps (also tying into the “GPS” in our name). Since we serve as a “hub” for other online resources, a hub-and-spoke design may be appropriate (and is roughly the inspiration for our current logo).

Many biological sites incorporate a double helix so we’re afraid that has been overdone. But on the other hand, the double helix is strongly associated with biology and genetics, so perhaps a subtle incorporation of a helix would be fine.

We are open to any color scheme, but the logo will be featured on a site that uses a relatively understated palette.

We intend to be very active in providing feedback on submitted designs, so please feel free to iterate on your ideas.
