What we do
Houston Civic Symphony is a community orchestra. A "community orchestra" is comprised of non-professional musicians, generally with other careers (doctors, lawyers, bankers, educators, IT professionals, accountants, realtors, etc.) who gather to rehearse and perform fine music for their own pleasure, and the pleasure of its audience.
Houston Civic Symphony has been in existence since 1967, and has performed free classical concerts for the Houston community each year.
Houston Civic Symphony has no paid staff, promotes free concerts in a regular September - May season, and currently raises its budget through member activities, and member/supporter/audience donations.

Things to communicate through the design
1. Professionalism
2. Dedication to fine classical music
3. Stability in the Houston fine arts community
The target audience
Our membership ranges in age from college student to early 70s, and is diverse in every area of measurement. Our audience tends to be older, but there is an increasing youth element as we focus on bringing high school and middle school students into our concerts as part of our educational mission.
Another major target for the logo is the business community. A program to increase the profile of the organization in the business community is underway, both for audience development, and as a potential funding source.
The logo should in some way evoke the substantial, long term presence of the organization in the community.
We like these fonts, colors and style
The logo used by the Symphony since approximately 1975 is attached as a reference point. Fresh ideas are needed to reflect the quality of the product now presented by the organization.
Other promotional items we have recently used are also attached. A visit to the Symphony's website,
[Login to view URL] would also be instructive. (Note that while you see the organization name on a green background often on the website, but that was not chosen by the organization, but the web designer, has just not been changed at this time, and is not an "official" color or design.)
As you can see, the current logo is so outdated and the copies we have now are so poor that it is rarely used in our materials. We need a clean, recognizable design that immediately brings to mind a full symphony orchestra, not a band or smaller scale music organization. Inclusion of the French horn in the old logo is by no means required, but designs that do use the horn will not be excluded from consideration.
The winning design will need to work well in a black and white environment in the event it is proposed in color. It should be scalable so that it looks good on a large banner or poster, or in a 1/4 page or smaller (business card) setting.
While freshness is welcome, the design should not be one that ages poorly, and begins to look dated in just a couple of years.
In short, we are looking for a design that expresses the tradition, stability over the long term, and professionalism of the organization.
