What we do
My name is Sifu Natasha Jeffery, and I am an instructor of Wing Chun Kung Fu under Grandmaster William Cheung. I am one of only two branches in the UK representing the Global Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Association. My business is just me, and as well as teaching the Traditional Wing Chun system, I am branching out into Personal Training and Self Defence, teaching in central London. We already have a logo for out worldwide association, which I am a part of. This logo will be something personal to me.
Industry: Sports & Recreation
Things to communicate through the design
1. My personality (see below)
2. Traditional Chinese, but made modern and current for present day, Western market
3. Professional quality, classy and upmarket
The target audience
I am aiming to make this a highly successful business enterprise, centred around me and the martial art of Wing Chun, as an offshoot of our global association.
Most martial arts clubs are not operated as successful businesses. They are amateur and hobbyist, limited to village hall karate. I am trying to pitch myself way above this. (I am a full time professional who trained full time under the Grandmaster of the system, not someone with a regular job who does this in spare time). A quick google image search of Wing Chun logos shows that many of them are not good. (The standard, cliched logo is a circle with the name of the instructor, then some Wing Chun equipment inside the circle). Others are unimaginative, old-fashioned, and sadly limited to Chinese cliches that are often inappropriate to the art (shows limited understanding). I want something that stands out, has an instant visual impact, is relevant and recognisable. As our association and art is worldwide, I am aiming for worldwide recognition and internet presence as a technician in the art, on youtube, facebook, twitter. The logo needs to be instantly recognisable on social media.
I will be situating myself in Cental London for a wide pool of people, where I can tap into the existing audience of martial arts / Kung Fu / Bruce Lee enthusiasts. However, to make my business more viable, I will be casting a much wider net, offering Personal Training and running series of self-defence programs and seminars. I imagine that my clientele will be intelligent and successful in their own right; city professionals, busy workers, celebrities, artists, as Wing Chun is an intelligent, highly technical art form. It is not a competitive sport and lacks the brutality and ego of MMA. The people I will attract have an understanding and appreciation of quality, as I have an exceptionally high lineage as a student of the Grandmaster, and will be teaching in top quality locations in London. In the city, self-defence will be hugely marketable especially to women who leave work alone and take public transport. I am also targeting exclusive health clubs for self-defense seminars, and people interested in health and fitness, nutrition, self-development, meditation. Above all, Kung fu is inclusive and must be accessible to everyone.
We like these fonts, colors and style
Basic design concept:
Please see attached logo from our umbrella organization. I do not want to duplicate anything contained within this logo, so I do not need the “Traditional Wing Chun” text or calligraphy.
As this logo will be mine, I need something that visually represents me as a brand. This is the most important design concept. My chinese birth sign is the fire tiger, and I am also a redhead, which is a pretty good natural trade mark. I'd like something that captures the essence of the Fire Tiger; courage, determination and a formidable warrior, but also originality and creativity. I've attached some images of concepts that could be played with; the butterfly swords, wooden dummy and Wing Chun vertical punch, although these are recurring themes in existing logos so would have to be used creatively, if at all. I am open to creative suggestions.
Text: The only text that could be included is my name, or abbreviation of my name. “Sifu Natasha Jeffery”
Adaptable:to be used across a range of platforms. eg. More complete version for website header, scaled down for club t-shirt design.
Style: Artistic, creative. See attached examples.
Font: Classic font, nothing too gimicky.
Colour: The colour scheme of my branding is going to be glassy/off-black, silver, and gold/firey, so the logo must fit into this. Must be able to go on black background.
DOES NOT LIKE:cartoon-like, people figures, the yin yang (wing chun came more from Buddhism than taoism). I despise pink.
Our design will be used on
(Web) (Print Media) (Billboards & Signs) (Mugs & Tshirts)
Additional Info Added Feb 16, 2016
On basis of the submissions so far I now have a far clearer idea of what I want.
Ideally I'd like the logo to be adaptable between the traditional, round 'badge' format associated with martial arts, for use on t-shirts, social media etc, (see design #26 and #27)
BUT
I'd love to be able to take the centre feature of the circle out to be reconfigured with the text underneath, or alongside in the same font, as the layout in design #13, #12, #14 and #15, which works on different backgrounds for website header and letterheads.
