What we do
As an environmental treaty under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme, the Convention on the Conservation on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (also known as the Bonn Convention) provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range.
As the only global Convention specializing in the conservation of migratory species, their habitats and migration routes, CMS brings together the world’s governments to work together to conserve these species on a global scale. CMS complements and co-operates with a number of other international organizations, NGOs and partners, the media as well as in the corporate sector.
Migratory species threatened with extinction are listed on Appendix I of the Convention. CMS Parties strive towards strictly protecting these animals, conserving or restoring the places where they live, mitigating obstacles to migration and controlling other factors that might endanger them. Besides establishing obligations for each State joining the Convention, CMS promotes concerted action among the Range States of many of these species.
Migratory species that need or would significantly benefit from international co-operation are listed in Appendix II of the Convention. For this reason, the Convention encourages the Range States to conclude global or regional agreements.
In this respect, CMS acts as a framework Convention. The agreements developed in the framework of CMS may range from legally binding treaties (called Agreements) to less formal instruments, such as Memoranda of Understanding, and can be adapted to the requirements of particular regions. The development of models tailored according to the conservation needs throughout the migratory range is a unique capacity to CMS.

Things to communicate through the design
1. The logo will be used to communicate and help promote the eleventh Conference of the Parties to CMS (COP11) which will take place in Quito, Ecuador, from 4-9 Nov 2014 (CMS COP11, 4-9 November 2014 in Quito, Ecuador) The meeting, hosted by Ecuador (Host Go
2. COP11 is about the conservation of migratory species – avian, marine and terrestrial species! (see CMS Appendix List for Migratory Species covered by CMS: http://www.cms.int/sites/default/files/instrument/appendices_e.pdf)
3. 3. Reflects the theme of COP11 “Time for action” (Time for Governments & the international conservation community to act to try to halt the decline of many migratory species)
The target audience
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the decision-making body of the Convention. It meets every three years. During the COP, delegates review the Convention’s implementation, adopt budgets, resolutions and recommendations and decide on priorities for future CMS activities. Participants of the COP are Focal Points from Contracting Parties and Range States, representatives from Non-Governmental organisations, scientists, the media and other CMS stakeholders.
Primary target audiences are these government representatives, but we also would like the COP logo to work for a global public audience, help generate interest in the Convention and the COP amongst other audiences such as NGOs active in wildlife/ nature conservation, the media and the interested public.
The logo should reflect the date and venue of the conference (CMS COP11, 4-9 Nov 2014, Quito, Ecuador). It should be dedicated to the conservation of migratory species and should somehow reflect/include the COP 11 theme “Time for action”.
With Ecuador as the host country of the conference, the logo should include symbolic elements of Ecuador, colors of the Ecuador flag and/or migratory species that occur in the country of in Latin America (please note that CMS covers terrestrial, avian and marine migratory species; examples of migratory species that occur in Ecuador are, for instance, the Manta Ray, Blue Whale, Amazonian manatee, Amazon river dolphin, Mexican free-tailed bat or the Galapagos Petrel).
The logo could also include the silhouette of Ecuador’s region or its indigenous people. In a nutshell, the logo should a) stand for CMS – the (only) global Convention dedicated to migratory animals b) showcase COP11 and that this important 11th meeting of the Parties will be taking place in Quito and hosted by Ecuador (Host Country) and c) signify the theme, i.e. that it is “time for action”, in other words time for governments to unite and act for the world’s migratory species.
Please note that we would need several variations of the final (selected) COP11 logo design, because the logo needs to be agreed upon several stakeholders that are involved in the organization of the conference (i.e. Ecuador as host country and UNEP/CMS Secretariat).
The official languages of the Convention are English, French and Spanish – so we would need these different language versions of the logo as well for which the text will be provided upon final selection of the winning / selected design.
