What we do
I have a tourist guide service in Saint Petersburg, Russia that is struggling and I'm going to try to turn it around with a new website and a new logo!
I think the new logo should feature an image of "The Church Of Spilled Blood." Here's a link to some shots of it:

Here is an example of how it was used in a logo:

I think that is actually St. Basil's Church in Red Square Moscow, but it gives the same idea.
Here's another example of how it was used in a logo.
Saint Petersburg, Russia is an incredible city. It's vibrant, dynamic, and loaded full of all kinds of interesting old buildings. But it's not an easy city to navigate for anyone that does not understand the Russian language. The best way to visit this city is to stay for 7 to 9 days and to hire a private guide who is fluent in your language.
We serve the independent traveler: singles, couples, small groups. Often we arrange things so that a guide and driver is waiting for the customer at the airport. We escort them to the hotel, let them get settled in, and then the adventure begins.
The guide is able to whisk the tourist from place to place much quicker than a traveler could on their own. So their precious Saint Petersburg time is more efficiently managed. Our guides can also get them access to tourist attractions more quickly in many cases, thus avoiding long wait times in lines. It simply makes sense to hire a private guide when visiting Saint Petersburg.
Many tourists visit Saint Petersburg by cruise ship, but this can only give a small taste of what this city is about, because the cruise ships stay no longer than 3 days, with most leaving within 48 hours.
So we advocate arriving by plane and staying longer. There is so much to see and do. And if this is to be a once-in-a-lifetime visit, then they should definitely forget about doing a cruise visit and fly in instead for a longer stay.
I started this business in December 2001.
The city of Saint Petersburg does a crappy job of promoting tourism. So with my new site, I am going to try to fill that space a bit with a guide reservation service that has an "official" look to it.
Industry: Travel & Hospitality
Things to communicate through the design
1. This is about visiting Russia.
2. This (appears to be) the official guide reservation site for this city.
3. Professional, established business.
The target audience
The target audience is the independent traveler who has a degree of affluence.
If you visit the visitSaintPetersburg.com website, you'll see that it is directed at the gay and lesbian traveler. It is one of 4 websites I have for this guide service. And the gays have not helped me much with sending business my way. So I am re-branding the site in a way that will not mention gays at all. So I absolutely DO NOT want a gay-oriented logo. (Thanks.)
Our target audience is people who like international travel who have the discretionary income to afford hiring a guide. People with some money. Not the budget traveler.
More than 50% of our customers are Americans, usually couples. Many of our customers have actually been lawyers.
We like these fonts, colors and style
I've had trouble finding exactly what I like. I believe in encouraging artist freedom. So go ahead and let your design brilliance run wild. I will love seeing what you guys can come up with.
I am looking to make a fast decision once the competition ends, as I want to get the website re-development underway quickly.
Our design will be used on

I forgot to mention, if anyone decides to feature any of those onion-domed church steeples in their design, I would strongly prefer that there be no crosses on top of them or anywhere in the design. Thanks!

Here are two links to another onion domed church in Saint Petersburg. It might inspire a design idea:

My colleagues in Russia will be helping me with the final decision along with the web designer. I really appreciate all the hard work involved by everyone.

I think any design that has an official look to it would also be good.
