What we do
We are building a portal to support a consortium of scientists who are researching "extracellular RNAs" (http://commonfund.nih.gov/Exrna/).
As a brief introduction, it's commonly thought that the DNA in each cell produces RNA, whose primary role is to produce proteins. More and more, RNA molecules are being found to have important functions in their own right. This consortium focuses on studying the role of extracellular RNAs (exRNAs), which are RNA molecules that have been exported outside of the cell. Most often, they are released in "exosomes", which are spheres that are surrounded by a membrane and contain RNAs. It's thought that these exRNAs may be one way cells communicate with each other.
This two-minute video is a good introduction to the topic:

Things to communicate through the design
1. Authoritative resource
2. Collaborative community
3. Health/medical impacts
The target audience
The target audience is composed of other biomedical scientists who are not in the consortium, as well as the general public.
We like these fonts, colors and style
The NIH came up with this image:
[Login to view URL] but it's not really suitable for a logo. Without constraining your imagination, this image does illustrate several of the key entities described above. The hairpin-like things are the exRNAs, the small circles are exosomes, and the larger bodies are cells. I've tried to make this clear in the uploaded image.
Other consortia of scientists have developed websites and logos as well. The scientific goals are different (not related to exRNAs), but it may give you ideas on how science-related sites look in general:
