We provide web usability (making websites user-friendly) training in South Africa with a focus on teaching IT professionals to deliver websites that are quick and easy to use, useful, and visually appealing.
IT department managers, HR managers, web developers, business analysts, graphic designers, web designers. Most of our clients are aged 20 to 40. They like to keep up with the trends.
We will be re-launching our business with some great new courses and ebooks, and would like to take the opportunity to completely re-brand our business. We're looking at an all-new logo, website, business cards, letterheads, brochures, etc.
We're looking for a fresh, modern, clean new logo that portrays Usable Planet as an innovative company in the IT industry. Usability is still a fairly new concept in South Africa, and we're currently the only SA-based usability training company.
Our current logo (see
[Login to view URL]) looks too "cartoonish" and it doesn't scale well to small sizes. We need a logo that looks modern, even a little funky. We also need something that scales down to a small size well, and that works on white as well as coloured backgrounds.
If you incorporate an image into your design, we'd prefer something related to people or people and technology, rather than something purely technology-related. Usability is about the interaction between people and technology, with the focus on people. While it would be great if you could incorporate an image that "explains" what usability is, an image isn't essential.
From a general look-and-feel perspective, we really like a web design we found on Template Monster (http://www.templatemonster.com/flash-templates/27549.html). We like the fresh, clean colour scheme (NOTE: We DON'T like the logo!). That should give you an idea of the kind of look we're going for.
As for the style, here are links to some of the logo designs we like:
-
[Login to view URL] It has a slightly funky feel and the colours make it fresh.
-
[Login to view URL] We really like the chrome effect, and the image is interesting. Colours are fresh. Look is modern and simple.
-
[Login to view URL] The image is interesting, but simple and the chrome effect makes it visually interesting (it's not flat).
-
[Login to view URL] It's simple, but the 3D effect makes it interesting.
PLEASE NOTE: The above links are provided purely to give you an idea of the kind of look we like - PLEASE do not copy any of the logos!
Regarding colours, we really like the idea of a vibrant orange shade, but we're open to any colour scheme. We'd prefer a logo with 3 colours as this would be beneficial to our website design. As long as the colour scheme is fresh and a little funky, we're not too picky (just nothing too wild like hot pink)!
We don't want to give too detailed a brief and curb your creativity, but if anything's unclear please post your questions.
Also, I (Nathalie) have 2 partners whose input I will need to get on your designs, so please be patient wrt feedback. I will make every effort to post feedback once a day or within 48 hrs at the most.
Thank you in advance for your efforts - we're really looking forward to seeing some awesome logos!

Just to be clear, the logos referenced in the brief are ones we like the style of. We don't necessarily like any of the symbols used in the logos.
We really like the "freshness" and vibrancy of the orange and blue in the logo at
[Login to view URL] - that's the brightness we're looking for.
We've agreed that we're not too keen on green!
NB: Our new logo must be vibrant! We want very fresh, vibrant colours - we don't want to stick with our current stale orange and grey!
We've come to a conclusion about the symbol... we'd like something like www.usableplanet.net/sphere.bmp. We're looking for a fresh modern version of this symbol - you can also add other elements to it if you like (e.g. person in the center). We are still open to other ideas though!
