What we do
For detailed information about the activities of the Australian Wetlands & River Centre (AWRC) please see website at [Login to view URL]

The AWRC has substantial expertise in river and wetland ecology. Our primary activities focus on the research opportunities available in this area of growing environmental and economic significance. Our group focuses research effort on the key threats, risks and uncertainties facing biodiversity of wetlands and rivers and their conservation values and seek to improve the capacity to link research results in river systems to on ground natural resource management.

We research wetlands, the plants and animals (waterbird, amphibians, insects) their populations, their current status, habitat requirements and their role as indicators of river health;

Much of the work of the Centre is about water, rivers and wetlands at a "catchment" scale, rather than just about water at a specific site - it is a system-wide view of water, that examines how all the ecological systems and processes fit together. If at all possible, this is the view of water, rivers and wetlands that we want to see in a graphic.
Industry: Natural Resources

Things to communicate through the design
1. rigorous scientific studies of wetlands & rivers
2. 2. driving significant improvement in natural resource conservation
3. collaboration, knowledge sharing

The target audience
We have a strong emphasis on providing rigorous advice to governments at State and Federal levels and building expertise in the adaptive management of Australia’s ecosystems.

Communication of research results is a key objective through peer reviewed papers, the media, electronic databases and other research outputs.

Students, post doctoral researchers

We like these fonts, colors and style
We think it is likely that the best design will focus on the acronym "AWRC", with the full text also used as a sort of subtitle, with the addition of a graphical element that reflects what we do. However, other approaches are welcome. We don't want to see waterbirds, reeds, fish etc used as primary graphical elements, as these ideas have been somewhat overworked. We don't want something too corporate, neither do we want something too "warm and fuzzy". It's OK to point to ecology, as long as science is also alluded to. The centre focus is science, and would like this to be reflected in any graphical element used. It is also useful to think in terms of rivers connecting water sheds or river basins.

We would like to see something to do with water in the logo, as much of the work of the centre is to do with water (or the lack of it) in river systems and wetlands of Australia. Will need to avoid droplet-type designs, as these have also been somewhat overworked, as have waterfalls, ripples in flat water, or things reflected in water. We also understand that with these sorts of restrictions, saying "water" graphically, is a big ask.

Logo will be used in a wide variety of media, backgrounds and sizes - the logo will need to work effectively when small and/or reversed, not just large and on a white background. Simplicity will be highly regarded. Must work in Black & White. Incorporating the web address would be great if possible (www.wetrivers.unsw.edu.au)

Our design will be used on
