The Ponseti International Association at the University of Iowa would like to draw attention to the most common musculo-skeletal birth deformity in the world, clubfoot. 200,000 children are born around the world each year with this deformity which is characterized by having one or both feet turned down and inward. This condition can be easily treated using what is called the Ponseti method, which consists of a series of gentle manipulations of the foot followed by plaster casts applied for a week each. After 4-6 weeks the condition is completely corrected and the child goes on to live a normal life. The Ponseti International Association is dedicated to promoting this relatively new technique around the world and has declared June 3rd as World Clubfoot Day to raise awareness about this deformity and that this deformity is easily treated.
